Namibia’s lesser-visited far south rewards the intrepid with yet more contrasts; the characterful German coastal town of Luderitz and the desert-encroached houses of Kolmanskop as well as spectacular Fish River Canyon, second largest on earth.
Carving its way through the soft bedrock of southern Namibia over millennia, the Fish River has created one of Africa’s greatest natural spectacles. Driving towards Luderitz from the canyon on roads constantly battling with the encroachment of the Namib’s shifting sands, a rare herd fo wild horses roam the sparse Garub plains near Aus; a magical sight. The historic pastel-hued houses of art-nuveau Luderitz on the windy South Atlantic coast give the town a surreal ‘lost in time’ feel, its foggy shores home to flocks of flamingos and colonies of penguins. Nearby, the eerie sand-filled houses of Kolmanskop are testament to the area’s lost diamond-rush days.
