In the far northeast of the country, a thin strip of land connects Namibia to the great Zambezi River. A remote riverine habitat, this lesser-visited region offers a lush contrast, with five protected reserves home to astounding birdlife and elephant.
A 280 mile long panhandle, the Caprivi Strip was an accident of German empire-building , designed to give a navigable passage (so they thought) via the Zambezi River to the Indian Ocean and the East African territories. Victoria Falls rather ruined this plan. Whatever the reason for its creation, this wildlife-packed sliver of land sandwiched between Botswana and Zambia offers a similar game experience to the Okavango Delta; remote and personal. No wider than 20 miles in some places, it is bordered by four rivers and water-loving big game abounds, from hippo and crocodile to antelope such as sable, waterbuck, reedbuck and buffalo. And in the wetlands of Mahango National Park more species of birds can be found than at any other park in Namibia.
