Departing 31 October 2026
Embark on an unforgettable journey through Oman, a land of ancient wonders and dramatic landscapes. Begin in Muscat, centre for trade on the historic maritime Silk Roads route since the 2nd century. Here, gleaming white architecture and the majestic Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque set the tone. Wander through the vibrant Matrah Souq, then trace the city’s maritime heritage along the corniche.
Travel inland amidst the rugged Hajar mountains to Nizwa, once the capital of Oman, and explore its formidable 17th-century fort and fascinating souqs before venturing to the exquisite frescoes of Jabrin Castle and the enigmatic dunes of Wahiba sands.
Continue to Dhofar, the lush, green jewel of the south. Explore the legendary frankincense ports of al-Baleed (Zafar) and Khor Rori (Sumhuram) where echoes of ancient trade to Damascus and Rome whisper through the ruins. In Salalah, stroll through palm-fringed streets and bustling markets, and visit Wadi Dawkah, where for thousands of years Omani families have harvested frankincense, the ‘Gold of the Desert’ from the wadi’s superb trees. Finally, head out to the endless dunes of the Empty Quarter to visit the fabled city of Ubar and stargaze in the desert skies.
Throughout, your expert guide unravels Oman’s rich tapestry of Islamic scholarship, maritime prowess, and desert mystique. This immersive tour offers not only breathtaking scenery and cultural encounters, but a deep understanding of one of Arabia’s most captivating and least-explored nations.

Immunisations
Check the latest country-specific information and advice from the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC) on the TravelHealthPro website. Vaccines commonly recommended for Oman: Tetanus. A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is mandatory if arriving from a country with a risk of Yellow Fever such as Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania or Zambia.

Entry Regulations
Citizens of over 100 countries can visit Oman for up to 14 days without a visa, including the USA, Canada, UK, most EU and EEA countries, and some Asian and South American nations. Passports should be valid for a minimum of 6 months from the date of entry. Evidence of a previous visit to Israel (such as an Israeli entry/exit stamp in your passport) does not normally cause any difficulties when travelling to Oman.

Fitness Guideline
We have graded the fitness level required for participation in this tour as Moderate . This is a full itinerary, with some long days and a few days travelling by 4×4 on mountain or desert roads. There are no strenuous hikes, but whilst sightseeing we might be ‘on the go’ for several hours at a time in hot weather, without a chance to sit down and rest. One or two excursions involve uphill or downhill walks on uneven or narrow tracks. It is important that everyone is able to keep up with the group as we have a lot to see in the time allocated.
There is very little free time during the tour, so for those who would like some, we recommend a few pre-tour nights in Muscat to acclimatise and possibly some post-tour nights in Salalah at the end, to give you time to relax on the coast afterwards. We can quote and book these for you.
Many of the sites during the tour are not wheelchair accessible. If you routinely use sticks or a cane to walk short distances we regret that this tour won’t be suitable, but please contact us as we will be happy to arrange a private trip with your own guide instead, which can be tailored to match your mobility.

Lectures during our tours
All our tours are accompanied by an academic ‘trip scholar’ as well as local guides. The local guide or guides provide the day-to-day guiding on our tours, whilst the trip lecturer will give regular lectures on his/her specialist subject throughout to provide an academic overview. Lectures/talks usually last 30-40 minutes including questions and answers (if applicable). These are generally held in the evenings before dinner and attendance is optional. On some tours lectures may be given in other locations such as during longer bus journeys or at a site, depending on the lecturer and the schedule. We don’t usually specify before travel which days the lectures will be given (for operational reasons) but guests can expect them roughly every other day as a minimum, with some lecturers giving some kind of talk or presentation more frequently.
Pre-Tour Extensions
For those who are able to arrive a few days early into Muscat, we have a selection of wonderful coastal and beach hotels we can recommend in and around the city and surrounding coast, such as The Chedi, Al Bustan Palace, Shangri La or Jumeirah. And of course it’s also possible to stay at our group tour hotel for a few nights beforehand instead, to minimise packing and moving too many times. The Crowne Plaza Muscat by IGH has a private beach and a lovely swimming pool, and is also within easy reach of the airport and the city sights.
Post-Tour Extensions
For those who would like to relax after the tour with an extended stay at the beach in Salalah, we can quote for additional nights at our tour hotel, as well as the wonderfully luxurious Anantara Al Baleed, a beach resort which as the name suggests, is situated next to the Zafar/Al Baleed archaeological site.
A host of bespoke private extensions within Oman and beyond (to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia and more) can also be added to any specification, please speak to Lia, our tour coordinator for more details, at lia@templeworld.com.
