Egypt Beyond the Pyramids with CMNH

Including a luxury Nile cruise

Trip Scholar: Dr Meghan Strong

Egyptologist and Director of Collections, Cleveland Museum of Natural History
By Invitation Only from Cleveland Museum of Natural History

12 day tour
Price from $8,450

Special departure: Feb 23rd —Mar 6th 2027

Join Dr. Meghan Strong on this extensive exploration of ancient Egypt, by invitation only from the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.  Begin in style with visits to the pyramids at Giza, the Step Pyramid at Saqqara and the new Grand Egyptian Museum. Special access has been arranged for our group for a number of special experiences during the tour, starting with a chance to go inside the Sphinx enclosure to stand right between the huge Sphinx’s paws and view the Dream Stela (closed to the general public).

Then, deviating from the tourist trail, visit the lesser known ‘prototype’ pyramids at Dahshur, Meidum and Hewara, and take a 4×4 safari to Wadi al Hitan, a UNESCO World Heritage site where fossil whale remains have been found in the desert.

Next, fly to scenic Aswan in lower Egypt, to visit the Ptolomeic temple of Philae, moved to higher ground piece by piece when the Aswan High Dam was built. Then, board a privately chartered luxury riverboat, the Nawara Dahabiya.  An opulent 12-cabin two-masted riverboat, we’ll spend the next three nights exploring the Nile-side sites between Aswan and Luxor, including the Ptolemaic twin temples at Kom Ombo and the Temple of Horus in Edfu.  A great advantage of travelling by Dahabiya is that these nimble riverboats can dock at smaller villages and less-visited temples along the Nile, where larger cruise ships aren’t permitted, including the fascinating but little-visited quarries of Gebel Silsileh.

Arriving into Luxor after passing through the Esna Lock, enjoy a comprehensive exploration of its staggering sites, including the vast Karnak Temple complex, the Ramesseum and Colossi of Memnon.  See the spectacular tombs of the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens, then dig deeper into history with visits to the lesser-known Tombs of the Nobles and Workmen’s Village, which contain some of Luxor’s most rewarding, but least-visited tombs.  Special access has been secured to visit several richly decorated tombs which are normally closed to the public, an exciting highlight of this tour.

Stay in the best possible hotels in Cairo and Luxor, along with one of the finest small boats currently operating on the Nile.   For those with more time, Temple World would be delighted to quote for extra nights in Cairo or Luxor before/after the tour,  or arrange any number of private extensions in Egypt, to Alexandria, Siwa Oasis, the Red Sea beaches or other highlights.

Tour highlights

  • Explore the enigmatic passageways deep inside the Great Pyramid of Giza and walk right up to the Sphinx’s paws to see the ‘Dream Stela’ where visitors are not usually allowed.
  • Learn about the evolution of pyramid construction during visits to contrasting pyramids from different periods at the sites of Saqqara, Dahshur and Meidum
  • Enjoy a three-night cruise from Aswan to Luxor aboard a privately chartered luxury riverboat on the Nile,  exclusive to our group
  • Visit the spectacular Grand Egyptian Museum at Giza, destined to be the largest archaeological museum in the world
  • Take a 4×4 safari to Wadi al Hitan and the Valley of the Whales with its invaluable fossil remains of the Archaeoceti.
  • Wonder at the spectacularly decorated tombs in Luxor, of Kings, Queens, nobles and the artisans who worked on these tombs, including the special opening of two tombs which are closed to the general public.

Hello! I’m so looking forward to sharing Egypt with you on this exciting trip. I’ve spent countless hours exploring the sites we’ll visit – the tombs in Luxor and the Sphinx enclosure are some of my favorites – and I can’t wait to experience them with you.

Booking your own travel
You are most welcome to book your own flights to coordinate with this tour. The start point is Cairo (fly into CAI airport) on February 23, 2027. The first time the group will meet will be around 6PM for an introductory chat followed by dinner.  You can arrive any time on the first day – check in at the hotel starts from 3PM but if you plan to arrive earlier we will be happy to obtain a quote for extra nights or early check in.

The tour finishes in Luxor on March 6, 2027 and a domestic flight is included from Luxor to Cairo that day, unless you opt to add any extra nights in Luxor, the Red Sea or other local travel. If extending your stay, we can change the time/date/departure point of the final domestic flight to coordinate with your arrangements (small supplement may apply depending on availability).

When booking your onward flights from Cairo to your final destination, we advise a flight departure time from Cairo no earlier than 2pm, but preferably after 9:30pm as this coordinates with our group flight Luxor to Cairo on March 6, 2027.  If opting for a flight departure from Cairo between 2pm and 9:30pm that day it will be necessary to request that we book you a very early flight from Luxor to Cairo and a private Luxor transfer from the hotel to the airport (supplement applies for private transfer and there may be a surcharge for the early flight if busy).  We kindly ask that you do not book a flight departure from Cairo earlier than 2pm on February 5, as it will not be possible to get there from Luxor on time.

If you need accommodation near the airport in Cairo, an booking at the comfortable Le Meridien Cairo Airport (connected via walkway to Terminal 3 at Cairo Airport) can be arranged at extra cost, in order to fly the following morning.

We can arrange private transfers to meet any flight (supplement applies).

*Very important! Those who plan to book their own flights should not make any binding or non-refundable arrangements until their place has been confirmed in writing on the tour and Temple World has confirmed that minimum numbers have been reached to guarantee the departure.

Immunisations

Check the latest country-specific information and advice from the Travelers’ Health section of the Centres for Disease Control (CDC) website. Vaccines commonly recommended for holidays to Egypt: Hepatitis A + B (if not previously given), Typhoid.

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is mandatory if arriving from a country with a risk of Yellow Fever such as some parts of Africa and South America. You can check whether you require a Yellow Fever vaccine certificate on the CDC website.

Entry Regulations
You will need a visa to enter Egypt. E-visas can be purchased in advance online from the official Egypt e-Visa Portal.

If you prefer, Temple World’s partners in Egypt can pre-arrange a ‘visa on arrival’ for British, US, Australian and Canadian passport holders for a cost of $30 + $5 admin fee, if asked in advance.  These are paid for in US$ cash on arrival. Other nationalities should check visa eligibility with their nearest Egyptian Consulate.

Passports should be valid for a minimum of 6 months from the date of entry into Egypt.

Evidence of a previous visit to Israel (such as an Israeli entry/exit stamp in your passport) does not normally cause difficulties when travelling to Egypt.

Fitness Guidelines
We have graded the fitness level required for participation in this tour as Moderate to Active.  This is a full itinerary, with some long days and early starts.  There are no strenuous hikes, but whilst sightseeing we might be ‘on the move’ out in the open air for several hours at a time, without much of a chance to sit down and rest. Some sites involve uphill walks on uneven tracks, with loose stones/gravel, cobbles, or stairs without handrails.  It is important that everyone is able to keep up with the group as we have a lot to see in the time allocated. There is only a little free time during the tour so for those who feel they would like some, we recommend a few pre-tour nights in Cairo to acclimate and possibly some post-tour nights too if you would like time to relax afterwards.  We can quote and book these for you. Many of the sites during the tour are not wheelchair accessible.  If you routinely use sticks or a cane to walk short distances at home, we regret that this group tour is unlikely to be suitable, but please contact us as we will be happy to arrange a private trip instead.

Hotels during this tour

We have chosen the very best hotels in each location during this tour. In Egypt there are many so-called ‘5-star’ hotels and ships,  but only a few which can truly be considered 5-star by international standards. Being part of a well-known international brand does not guarantee excellence in this region,  but we have personally inspected every option and can say these hotels really are deserving of their accolades.

In Cairo, stay at the Marriott Mena House, an iconic hotel converted from a former hunting lodge in 1886, which has played host to King George V, Winston Churchill and Richard Nixon, among many other notable guests. It’s the closest hotel to the pyramids, and boasts fabulous views of them from the pool and some of the rooms.  There’s a fabulous swimming pool, several excellent dining outlets (including one with wonderful Pyramid views) and a pampering spa to erase jet-lag for visitors arriving from afar.

Please note that the historic section of the hotel is closed for restoration, so we will be staying in the modern section of the hotel. Partial Pyramid View rooms are included.  Full Pyramid view rooms and suites may be available – price on application.

In Luxor, the Luxor Hilton Resort and Spa is a tranquil oasis on the banks of the Nile, an intimate resort-style hotel with a stunning Nile-side swimming pool; the perfect retreat after a busy day of sightseeing.  It is the best hotel in Luxor, bar none.

The hotel’s lounges, restaurants and outdoor areas have all been renovated recently and the hotel has the ‘wow’ factor.   Six of the 236 bedrooms have been completely redesigned, whilst the rest feature classic, older-style furnishings; whilst these are a tiny bit dated, they are really comfortable and we much prefer them to the new style rooms as they have more character.

All rooms used for this tour have full Nile Views.  If you wish to upgrade to a Junior Suite or Suite please enquire for availability and supplements.

For our 3-night Nile Cruise from Aswan to Luxor, we have chartered the band new river cruiser Nawara. This luxury Dahabiya* features just 10 Deluxe Cabins and 2 Suites, a sundeck with heated pool and beautiful lounge and dining areas. Deluxe cabins are 245sq ft and each feature a marble bathroom with a shower overlooking the Nile. The two Suites are double-sized (490 sq ft) and feature a Jacuzzi bathtub as well as a shower in the ensuite bathroom, and a spacious private lounge area.

The Nawara combines refined comfort and personalized service with the ability to moor in places the large cruise ships can’t, ensuring an unforgettable journey through Egypt’s ancient wonders just for guests of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

*In case you’re not familiar with this style of ship, a Dahabiya (pronounced dah-hah-BEE-yah) is a shallow-draft Nile river boat with just a handful of cabins and no engine.  The history of the dahabiya goes back to Pharaonic times: there are inscriptions of very similar boats in the tombs of ancient Egyptian Kings and Nobles. Famous Egyptian leaders, such as King Farouk and President Sadat, had their own dahabiyas.  For several decades during the rise of the ‘bigger is better’ style of motorized Nile cruise ship in the 20th century, this elegant and intimate method of Nile navigation was almost forgotten. Now, a new breed of luxury Dahabiya cruises are emerging, as discerning visitors seek a counterpoint to high-volume ships and mass-market experiences, choosing instead the kind of timeless and intimate exploration of the Nile that were previously reserved only for heads of state.

Note:  Dahabiya are fitted with two lateen sails, which the crew unfurl when conditions are just right, harnessing the power of wind and currents to glide along – a magical experience.  However, windpower can be fickle, and to be sure to complete the journey and all the stops in the requisite number of days, modern Dahabiyas use a small tug boat to pull the ship for the majority of their journeys, and only put their sails up occasionally.    The tow-rope is long, so the tug can do its work from quite some distance ahead.  This means that even when the ship is being towed, Dahabiya guests will enjoy the beautiful sounds of the river rather than engine noise whilst cruising, and will not be subject to any of the fumes or vibrations common on large Nile cruisers. It doesn’t detract from the experience at all, but since most photographs of Dahabiyas don’t show the tugboat we think it’s important to set expectations regarding the use of sails ahead of time.  You can see the tow-rope in action on this beautiful video of Nawara.

Lectures during our tours
All our tours are accompanied by an academic ‘trip scholar’ as well as local guides. The local guide or guides provide the day-to-day guiding on our tours, whilst the trip lecturer will give periodic lectures on his/her specialist subject at useful points during the tour, to provide an academic overview. Lectures/talks usually last 30-40 minutes including questions and answers (if applicable). These are generally held in the evenings before dinner and attendance is optional. On some tours, lectures may be given in other locations such as during longer bus journeys or at a site, depending on the lecturer and the schedule. We don’t always specify before travel which days the lectures will be given (for operational reasons) so where lectures/talks are mentioned in the itinerary please note that the day/time/location is for guidance only and any changes to the lecture schedule will be advised locally.

Extensions

Red Sea
For those who would like to end their exploration with a relaxing stay on the beautiful Red Sea coast, the resort towns of Hurghada, El Gouna and Soma Bay are easily reached via a 3.5-4-hour private road transfer from Luxor.  There are three extremely good international-standard 5-star hotels there, with the chance to snorkel and dive in the coral-rich waters of the Red Sea.  It’s possible to stop and see the beautiful yet little-visited Ptolomeic temple at Dendera on the way.  Egyptair flies from Hurghada Airport to Cairo for onward connections, and there are also many inexpensive direct flights from Hurghada to European cities such as London, Frankfurt, Rome, Paris and Amsterdam on various European airlines too.

Oberoi Beach Resort, Sahl Hasheesh
An exclusive, 5-star all-suite luxury hotel located 30 minutes from Hurghada Airport on the Red Sea. Spanning 48 acres of private, landscaped grounds, it is renowned for its attentive service, private sandy beach with an extensive coral reef, high-end dining, and spacious, traditional Arabian-designed suites. Snorkelling right off the hotel’s jetty is fabulous.
Steigenberger Resort Ras Soma
Opened in 2021, this 409 room, five-star property is one of the newest on the Red Sea. It boasts five restaurants and features an enormous pool at its centre, surrounded by chic cabanas and floating day beds. Guests can try diving, kite-surfing, stand up paddleboarding and sailing at the private beach, or play tennis, work out in the gym and swim in the pool within the grounds.
Casa Cook El Gouna
A five-star adults-only hotel in El Gouna with a laid-back spirit, this beachfront hideaway is the epitome of understated luxury, steps away from the azure waters of the Red Sea. It’s the perfect couples’ hotel with private pools, poolside terraces, and an upscale spa.   One of the only boutique offerings on the whole coast,  it’s more about the pool than the beach here, a secluded boho bolthole by the sea.

Alexandria and/or Siwa Oasis

Either before or after the main tour, it’s possible to add in a 2-3 night stay in Alexandria and/or a fly-in visit to Siwa Oasis.  Alexandria is just 2.5 hours by road transfer from Cairo (there’s also an efficient, fast train) and  the wonderful Four Seasons Alexandria hotel makes a perfect base from which to explore the city’s sites, both ancient and modern.  We can arrange transfers, accommodation and a private guide so you can explore this fascinating city.

Siwa Oasis is best reached via light aircraft due to its remoteness; there we love to stay at Adrere Amellal, a desert lodge that resembles a traditional Siwan village, with buildings sculpted from karshef, a local adobe-like material that keeps interiors naturally cool.  Float in Siwa’s shimmering salt lakes, rinse off in Cleopatra’s Hot Springs, wander the crumbling walls of Shali Fortress, and visit the fascinating Temple of the Oracle.  Let us know if you’d like a quote to add this on to your main tour, with accommodation, transfers by road or light aircraft to and from Siwa, and activities.

Other extensions in Egypt, regional add-ons, international stopovers
A host of bespoke private extensions within Egypt and beyond to countries such as Jordan, Turkey and anywhere in Europe can also be added to any specification, please ask to speak to our tailor-made team for more details. We can arrange flights to return home via any route and from any airport.

Please enquire for options and prices with Lia from our Groups Team for more details at lia@templeworld.com.
