Tour date 13-20 September 2025
THE RICH AGRICULTURAL lands of Tunisia were once the prized breadbasket of the Roman Empire, and today contain Rome’s most complete treasure trove of archaeological remains outside of Italy. 800 years of prosperity are evident in the magnificent mosaics on display both in museums and at the sites themselves, at the spectacular Roman city of Dougga and at el Djem, with its massive amphitheatre arguably in better condition than Rome’s Colosseum. And the remains of the once-mighty capital of the Carthaginian Empire in Tunis aptly tell the story of the epic power struggle between Carthage and Rome during the Punic Wars.
Tour highlights
- Uncover the remains of the Carthaginian Empire in Tunisia, from its once mighty capital, Carthage, to Thuburbo Majus

Trip Scholar
Professor Andy Merrills, Professor of Ancient History at the University of Leicester, and for 2024-2025, a Bye Fellow at Gonville and Caius College Cambridge.
Professor Merrills’ teaching and research focuses on the history and archaeology of North Africa, especially in the later Roman and post-Roman period. He has published extensively on the subject, and is the author of several books, including The Vandals (2010) (with Richard Miles), a study of the fascinating barbarian group who ruled the kingdom of Carthage from 439-534 CE; and War, Rebellion and Epic in Byzantine North Africa (CUP 2023), which examines a peculiar epic poem celebrating a forgotten military campaign in southern Tunisia in the middle of the sixth century. Originally from Sheffield, Professor Merrills was educated at The Queen’s College, Oxford (BA) and Trinity College, Cambridge (MPhil, PhD). He has also held research positions at King’s College, Cambridge, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the University of Sydney.
Lectures during our tours
All our tours are accompanied by an academic ‘trip scholar’ as well as local guides. The local guide or guides provide the day-to-day guiding on our tours, whilst the trip lecturer will give regular lectures on his/her specialist subject throughout to provide an academic overview. Lectures/talks usually last 30-40 minutes including questions and answers (if applicable). These are generally held in the evenings before dinner and attendance is optional. We don’t usually specify before travel which days the lectures will be given (for operational reasons) but guests can expect them roughly every other day as a minimum, with some lecturers giving some kind of talk or presentation more frequently, especially on shorter tours.
Private extensions in Tunisia
For those who would like to explore Tunisia or simply add a few days’ relaxation time after the tour, we would be delighted to quote for hotels and guided excursions to extend your stay.
2 night/3 day Sahara Extension (Private)
We can arrange a short extension to visit the spectacular Tunisian Sahara and historic oases. After the main tour finishes, you’d be collected by a private guide and driver and transferred to the oasis of Tozeur, which is fed by 100 springs. You’ll have one night there, and one night in Douz, you’ll have a full day exploring the desert and the picturesque Berber mountain oases of Chebika and Tamerza by 4×4, located amidst the rugged outcrop of the Atlas Mountains and dating back to Roman times. You’ll also cross the incredibly beautiful salt lake, shop in a Bedouin market, and you have the option to take a light aircraft flight over the desert or to see it from the back of a camel. On the final day, you’ll travel to Matmata (of Star Wars notoriety), but more importantly, center of the most extensive number of traditional troglodyte pit homes in the region. After visiting this incredibly scenic area (and climbing some sand dunes, if you’re game), return to Tunis on a short domestic flight.
Accommodation in Tozeur is in a choice of 4 or 5 star hotel with a pool, and you have the choice of a similar hotel in Douz for the second night, or a night in a desert camp. You can also add extra nights in Douz should you have the time to explore a little longer, there’s lots to see in this area.
Price: from £500 per person for 2 nights/3 days based on two people travelling, depending on accommodation and activities chosen.
Djerba Island
Djerba, off the southeast coast of Tunisia, is a beguiling island that embodies the essence of North African charm. With its whitewashed buildings, picturesque olive groves and palm-fringed beaches, this tranquil paradise makes an ideal private extension after our tour – a beach stay with charming local surrounds. A melting pot of Berber, Arab, and Jewish influences, the island’s capital, Houmt Souk, bustles with life as vendors peddle colourful textiles, handcrafted pottery, and mounds of spices. Step back in time at the ancient synagogue of El Ghriba, one of the oldest in the world, explore the troglodyte dwellings at Medenine or theruins of the ancient Roman city of Meninx. The island’s mild climate ensures that outdoor adventures can be enjoyed year-round.
Price: Accommodation ranges from resorts such as Iberostar Selection Eolia Djerba (5 nights All Inclusive from £1100 plus transport) to the 5 star Radisson Blu Djerba (5 nights on B&B from £800 plus transport). Djerba is reached via a short domestic flight from Tunis and there are direct flights from Djerba to London on departure.
Luxury Desert Resort
If you like the idea of the desert but prefer to relax in a luxury resort and do excursions using that as a base, perhaps interspersed with some spa treatments, we can quote for a 3-4 night stay at a luxury desert resort such as the stunning Anantara Tozeur or The Residence Douz. 3 night stays at one of these resorts start from £275 per person including breakfast, plus the cost of transport to get there. Activities can be booked locally. Please enquire for rates.
The Residence Tunis/Four Seasons Tunis
These two top hotels are a great way to relax after the tour near the airport, in luxurious surrounings with a resort feel, yet still within easy reach of sights. Both located on the Gulf of Tunis, they boast beach access and resort facilities such as a golf course, tennis courts and a thalasso spa, whilst still being convenient for Tunis’ old medina, exploring the ruins of Carthage or strolling through the picturesque blue-and-white painted town of Sidi Bou Said.
